The National Impact Assessment of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Measures Report (2015 Impact Report), released earlier this month, is a comprehensive assessment of the CMS quality measures. This watershed report summarizes key findings from CMS quality measurement which recommends next steps to improve on these efforts.
- Quality measures and the related rewards and penalties pervade all aspects of health care. While CMS has aligned its quality strategy with the National Quality Strategy (NQS) mandated by the Affordable Care Act, less than half of the quality measures align with other state and federal program measures.
- The Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) recently announced that several of the measures used in the CMS Star Rating program will be adopted into the statewide health improvement collaborative, the Washington Health Alliance, in the creation of a Statewide Common Measure Set for Health Care Quality and Cost.
What Does This Mean for You?
The report, by virtue of the depth, scope, and variety of quality measures described, enables a more holistic view of quality across multiple health care sectors and offers a window into the future direction of measurement. With the PQA announcement, it seems that the future measure alignment focus may be closer than we think. How prepared are you to provide pull-through services that address the key strategies outlined in the report?
